But that’s a different conversation from “I don’t want his album to be all ‘I’m gay”. And constantly using spectacle to shield not being a good performer is transparent. But even before being “out” Lil Nas X was a gimmick. I’m really not seeing the problem with making every video as “gay” as he wants them to be. But I’m not about to single him out and put more pressure on him in particular. It’d be nice for him to grow and give us something legitimately good. However, so many top selling artists are redundant, gimmicky, and mediocre in every way.

Being open and expressive isn’t the same thing as saying “hey, y’all. To be fair, it’s not unusual or necessarily wrong to be wary of Lil Nas X using his sexuality as a gimmick to sell records.
